Which compressor oil does an air-conditioner use — Emkarate RL32H or RL68H?

Use the grade the compressor manufacturer (OEM) specifies on the nameplate or in the manual. A system on HFC refrigerant needs a polyol ester (POE) oil such as Emkarate RL — mineral oil does not mix with HFC. The number in the name is the viscosity grade: in the oil maker's guide, RL22H to RL68H suit residential reciprocating and rotary compressors, while RL100H and up are for larger industrial and commercial machines (see the table below). RL32H and RL68H are the two grades people search for most. Send the compressor model and the refrigerant and we check the grade before you order.

What customers run into

Each one has a solution we have already proven on real Thai plant

Mineral oil in an HFC system — the oil collects in the evaporator and the compressor runs short of oil
POE mixes with HFC refrigerant, so the oil keeps returning to the compressor (Lubrizol)
Retrofitting from R22 — old mineral oil is left in the system
Residual mineral oil can reach about 10% of the charge and spoil miscibility; remove as much as possible and follow the oil maker's retrofit procedure — we help plan it
Not sure which grade the compressor maker wants
Send the nameplate and refrigerant; we check it against the oil maker's guide and approval list (a guide only — the OEM decides)
R32 compressor — it runs hotter and some scroll models call for a specific POE
We say so up front: for R32 scroll units follow the compressor maker's oil, then we quote that exact oil

Frequently asked questions

What is POE compressor oil and which refrigerants is it for?

POE is polyol ester, a synthetic compressor lubricant made for systems running on HFC refrigerants. Emkarate RL is a POE range from Lubrizol, used for initial fill and service fill in air-conditioning and refrigeration compressors. Choose it by refrigerant type, compressor design and operating conditions.

Which compressor oil does my air-conditioner use?

The one the compressor manufacturer names on the nameplate or in the manual. R22 systems traditionally ran on mineral oil (though some R22 compressors specify POE) and HFC systems (R134a, R404A, R407C, R410A) run on POE — but some compressors, including some R32 units, name their own POE or another ester. Do not guess from the refrigerant alone.

What is the difference between Emkarate RL32H and RL68H?

Viscosity. RL32H is about 32.5 cSt at 40°C and RL68H about 66.6 cSt, so RL68H is the thicker oil. In the maker's guide both are listed for residential reciprocating and rotary compressors and for commercial and industrial machines; which one applies to your compressor is the OEM's call.

Can I use mineral oil with R32, R410A or R134a?

No. Mineral oil does not mix with HFC refrigerants, so oil collects in the evaporator and the compressor can run short of lubricant. HFC systems need a POE (or the ester the OEM specifies).

Do I have to change the oil when I change from R22?

If the system moves to an HFC refrigerant such as R407C, yes — the oil must become POE and as much old mineral oil as possible must be removed, because residual mineral oil can reach about 10% of the charge and spoil miscibility. A move to R32 or R410A normally also means equipment designed for that refrigerant. See our R22 and retrofit pages.

Can Emkarate RL be used in an R32 compressor?

Check with the compressor maker first. R32 runs at higher discharge temperatures, and Lubrizol itself offers separate POE series for R32 scroll compressors. We quote the oil the compressor maker specifies.

How should POE oil be stored and handled?

Keep the container closed and open it only when you are ready to charge. Compressor makers set a very low water content for the oil — BITZER, for example, requires an alternative oil to be guaranteed below 50 ppm.

Which pack sizes are available and how much does it cost?

Emkarate RL is available in a variety of packages. Tell us the grade, pack size and quantity and we confirm what we can supply and send a quotation — prices follow grade, size and volume, so none is printed on this page.

How do I check that an Emkarate pack is genuine?

Lubrizol says it provides packaging identifiers and a verification process to confirm authenticity. Ask us for the lot you are quoted and check it through the maker's brand-assurance channel.

Where can I buy it, and do you deliver outside Bangkok?

We quote and deliver nationwide from Nonthaburi. Because Emkarate RL is supplied to order, we confirm grade, pack size and lead time with the quotation before anything is shipped.
