สรุป (TL;DR)

Annual inspection guide for warehouse pallet racking systems. Covers pre-inspection checklist, ANSI MH16.1 damage acceptance criteria, beam deflection limits, anchor torque, plumb tolerance, and a Green/Amber/Red decision table.

Why Annual Racking Inspection Is Required

Steel racking in warehouses degrades over time through forklift impact damage, overloading, and corrosion. ANSI MH16.1 and EN 15512 both mandate inspection by a competent person at least annually — and after any incident that may have caused structural damage.

Risks of skipping inspection:

  • Collapse during operations — a life-safety hazard
  • Product loss from rack deflection or failure
  • Legal liability for the warehouse operator

Pre-Inspection Checklist

  • Is the original load notice (maximum load placard) from the rack manufacturer available?
  • Are structural drawings or design documentation available?
  • Is every aisle at least 3,500 mm wide (standard counterbalance forklift clearance)?
  • Are zones with different load ratings clearly marked?
  • Inspection tools ready: 1 m metal straightedge, plumb bob or spirit level, calibrated torque wrench, tape measure

Upright Frame Damage Criteria (ANSI MH16.1)

Bow or deflection in upright posts:

Rating Deflection (per 1,000 mm of height) Action
Pass <3 mm Continue normal use
Repair Required 3–5 mm Reduce load immediately; repair within 30 days
Out of Service >5 mm Unload zone immediately; consult structural engineer

Measurement method: Place a 1,000 mm metal straightedge along the upright face and measure the maximum gap between straightedge and post.

Beam Deflection Criteria

Per EN 15512 and ANSI MH16.1:

Condition Limit
Maximum acceptable deflection ≤ span / 180
Example: 2,700 mm span ≤ 15 mm
Example: 3,600 mm span ≤ 20 mm

Measure when beams are under full rated load.

Connector Inspection (Beam-to-Upright)

  • Apply 25 kg upward force to the beam end — the connector must not disengage from the upright
  • Verify that all safety locking pins or clips are fully engaged
  • Connectors that are bent, cracked, or deformed must be replaced immediately — do not straighten or hammer back into position

Anchor Bolt Inspection

  • Recommended torque for M12 anchors: 50–70 N·m (verify with a calibrated torque wrench)
  • Inspect concrete for cracking within a 50 mm radius of each anchor
  • If cracks extend beyond 50 mm radius → take zone out of service; consult structural engineer
  • If anchor can be removed without reaching full torque → re-expand anchor or relocate to a new position

Plumb (Vertical Alignment) Tolerance

Per EN 15512:

  • Maximum acceptable out-of-plumb: 1:350 (e.g. a 5,000 mm upright may deviate no more than 14.3 mm)
  • Beyond this tolerance → structurally compromised; reduce load and arrange repair

Load Notice Verification

  • A load notice must be posted at a clearly visible location in every aisle
  • The placard must state: maximum load per beam level, maximum load per bay, and permitted pallet type
  • If the placard is missing or illegible → do not load the rack until a new placard is installed

Green / Amber / Red Summary Table

Issue Type Continue Use Use + Repair Stop Immediately
Upright bow <3 mm 3–5 mm >5 mm
Beam deflection <span/180 span/180 to span/150 >span/150
Connector Locked, no movement Slight looseness, lock engaged Disengaged, cracked, bent
Anchor Full torque, no cracks Slightly undertorqued Pulls out / cracks >50 mm radius
Plumb <1:350 1:350 to 1:200 >1:200
Load notice Clearly visible Faded but readable Missing
