Zinc-rich vs Epoxy vs PU
Choose by mechanism + job
Three different mechanisms: zinc-rich = sacrificial anode · epoxy = barrier · PU = UV+weather — a 16-row table of real specs + ASTM B117 salt spray + ISO 12944 + industrial paint prices for zinc-rich / epoxy / PU in Thailand
We do not sell zinc-rich primer — the anti-rust coatings we sell are SGP-001 (one-part PU) and SGU-201 (epoxy for wet or underwater steel).
Coatings we sellIn short — three mechanisms, three different roles
A C4-C5 system per ISO 12944 uses all three together — zinc-rich (primer) + epoxy (intermediate) + PU (topcoat). The table helps you decide on real specs
Zinc-rich
- Zinc dust ≥ 80% → corrodes in place of the steel (galvanic action)
- Protects even where the coating is damaged or scratched — the steel still does not rust
- Suits new structural steel — bridges, transmission towers, pipelines
- ASTM D520 Type II (organic) / Type III (inorganic)
First-coat primer on new steel that will see water + chemicals (ISO 12944 C4-C5)
Epoxy
- Impermeable film → blocks H₂O / O₂ / chloride
- High chemical resistance — petrochemical, food plants, labs
- Works as a primer (surface-tolerant) or as the intermediate
- No direct UV exposure — chalks + cracks within 1-2 years
Indoor industrial, tank linings, plant rooms, underground pipes — environments without UV
Polyurethane (PU)
- Gloss retention 5-10 years — withstands UV + rain + temperature swings
- Wide colour + finish choice — dark shades, gloss, matte, metallic
- The topcoat that protects the zinc + epoxy beneath
- Costs more + cures fast → tight work scheduling needed
Topcoat of a 3-coat system — outdoor structures, roofs, marine, façades
