NLGI 0 = 355-385 (soft like sweetened condensed milk), NLGI 1 = 310-340, NLGI 2 = 265-295 (industrial default), NLGI 3 = 220-250 (firm like cold butter). Higher number = stiffer consistency. NLGI does NOT measure quality — only consistency. Quality is determined by base oil + thickener + EP additives.
Q2.Can I use NLGI 2 for everything?+
Yes for ~80% of applications — NLGI 2 is the default specified by most OEMs (electric motors, pumps, sealed-for-life bearings, wheel bearings, fans). Q3.Lithium vs Lithium Complex vs Polyurea vs Calcium — what's the difference?+
Thickener choice depends on temperature and environment:
• **Lithium soap** — dropping point ≥180°C, multipurpose default, −20 to 120°C, cheapest
• **Lithium Complex** — dropping point ≥260°C, better high-temp + EP load, modern EP grease standard
• **Polyurea** — dropping point 240-260°C, excellent oxidation resistance, sealed-for-life electric motors 100K hr
• **Calcium / Calcium Sulfonate Complex** — best water resistance (water washout < 1%), suits marine / paper mill / food machinery
**Never mix thickener types** — soap-clash incompatibility causes grease to liquefy and leak from bearings. Fully purge old grease before switching.
Q4.Dropping point vs max operating temperature — what's the difference?+
Dropping point (ASTM D2265) is the temperature at which grease melts to oil — it marks the upper limit at which the product is still grease, NOT a continuous-use rating. **Rule of thumb:** Max continuous operating temp = Dropping point − 50 to 80°C.
• Lithium dropping ≥190°C → continuous use up to ~120°C
• Lithium Complex dropping ≥260°C → continuous ~150°C
• Polyurea dropping ≥250°C → continuous ~160°C
Above these limits the base oil evaporates, oxidizes, and grease hardens. You can run above the continuous rating but must shorten re-lubrication intervals by 4-10×.
